CHAPTER 1

BACCARAT: WHAT IS IT?

What is Baccarat

In this chapter I will show you what Baccarat is.

You will see how Baccarat came to be.

Then in later chapters we will go through rules.

Baccarat is a very entertaining game, fun to play and fairly easy to learn. The game is of French origin, but there is also a theory which states that Baccarat was invented by an Italian croupier, tarot passionate, Felix Falguierein who lived in the fifteenth century.

Have you ever watched James Bond? The game that he plays in casinos and that is his favorite game is exactly this game – Baccarat.

This classy card game is played at casinos with six-deck or eight-deck of cards shuffled together. It is played by many of the world’s elite gamblers in many exclusive VIP casinos.

However, Baccarat is not solely reserved for people of fame and status who can make big bets.

In fact, Baccarat is very popular and fun to play and you can play it from your computer in any online Casino in UK.

You can learn to play the game in only a couple of minutes, and in this guide you will find everything you need to know, from basic rules to some tips that can be especially useful if you are a beginner in Baccarat. Nevertheless, you will also find some interesting ideas for advanced players.

CHAPTER 2

BETTING AND BASIC RULES

Basic rules of Baccarat

In this short chapter you will see how to bet in Baccarat.

I will show you  some betting strategies.

The first decision you will have to make is the amount of the bet. You begin by placing your bet on either on the Player’s hand, the Banker’s hand or a tie.

After you have placed the bet, the dealer will then give two cards to you and two cards to the Banker.

You will both place the cards face up and you will see what the total value of your cards is. The goal is to have a score of an 8 or 9. If a player has a total of 8 or 9, he or she wins.

CHAPTER 3

CARD POINT VALUE

Card Point Value

In this chapter we will go through card value.

I will also show you some rules linked to dealing.

Then in chapter 4 you can read about some variations.

Point value of the cards is calculated according to the rules.

Cards from 2 to 9 are counted at their face value.

Cards from 10 to the King have zero value.

And Ace has a value of 1.

If a count runs into the doubt digits, then the left digit is dropped (For example, 8 and 5 for a 13 count, the one at the front is dropped. The count is, therefore, worth 3)

When cards are turned face up, if the Player’s hand is between 0 and 5 points, the Player will get the third card.

If the Player doesn’t draw the third card, then the Banker cannot get the third card either.

There are exact rules when the third card can be dealt:

  • If the Banker has 3 points, and the Player doesn’t have the 8 points card.
  • If the Banker has 4 points, and the Player doesn’t have 0,1,8 or 9 points card.
  • When the Banker has 5 points and the Player doesn’t have the 4 to 7 points card.
  • When the Banker has 6 points and the Player doesn’t have the 6 or 7 points card.
  • If the Banker has 7 points, the third card will not be dealt.

Basically, the main aim of Baccarat is to bet on the hand that will result in the highest point value, closest to 9.

In this game the six-deck or eight-deck of cards are used and they are reshuffled after each hand.

As for your bet, you can bet on the Banker, the Player, a Tie or even on a combination of all three.

No matter how many players are included in the game, it is always only two hands that are dealt at the time. One is the Banker hand and the other is the Player hand.

As a player in Baccarat, you can bet on either the Banker’s or the Player’s hand.

CHAPTER 4

TWO TYPES OF THE GAME

Two Types of Baccarat

In this chapter you will learn about two main types of Baccarat.

I will explain how these two are played.

We will also go through certain variations

There are two types of Baccarat and some variations.

The first one is Punto Banco and a great number of casino baccarat games in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Finland, and Macau are “Punto banco” baccarat and they may be called simply as “Baccarat”.

Player (punto) and Banker (banco) are just the names for the two hands which are dealt in each coup. They represent two possible outcomes on which the bettor can bet.

So, player and banker have nothing to do with the real Casino functions. Player has no particular association with the gambler, and Banker is not associated with the house.

PUNTO BANCO is played with a shoe containing 6 or 8 decks of cards shuffled together. 8 decks are most commonly used.

For each coup, two cards are dealt face up to each hand, starting from “player” and alternating between the hands. The dealer, who is also called croupier may call the total (e.g., “Five Player, three Banker”).

If one of them (or both) achieves a total of 8 or 9 at this stage, the coup is finished. If neither of the players has the needed point value in the first two cards (known as a “natural”), the third card is drawn according to the rules, first for the Player’s rules, and then for the Banker’s.

After that the coup is finished, the outcome is announced, and winning bets are paid out.

Generally, the full-scale version of Punto banco baccarat is played at a large rounded table. Usually, there is a croupier who directs the game, along with two dealers who collect and pay bets. The show is held by one of the players, and he or she deals the cards by the croupier’s instructions.

The shoe moves clockwise or to the highest winning bettor – this depends on the rules of the house.

Chemin de Fer

Chemin de Fer in French means the railway, so it was called like this because it was quicker than the original game. It first appeared in the late 19th century. This version is still the most popular one in France.

In Chemin de Fer, six deck is used. Players sit around an oval table and discarded cards are placed in the center.

The game starts to the right of the croupier and continues counterclockwise.

At the beginning of the game, the croupier and then all players shuffle the cards in play order. The croupier shuffles a final time and the player to his left cuts the deck.

A player who will be “the banker” is the one who deals cards. The position of banker changes, as it passes counterclockwise during the game.

In each round, the banker wagers the amount he wants to risk. The other players, in order, then decide whether they will “go bank”, playing against the entire current bank with a matching wager. Only one player may “go bank”. If no one “goes bank”, players make their wagers in order.

The banker deals cards in this way: he or she deals two to himself/herself and two to the representative of the remaining players.

The player with the highest individual wager (or first in play order if tied for highest wager) is selected to represent the group of puntos.

If the banker or the player has the card value of eight or nine, the result is announced and then the hands are turned face-up and compared.

If neither of game players has an eight or nine, the player has a choice to accept or refuse a third card; if accepted, it is dealt face-up.

Usually, and this is traditional practice, a player accepts the third card if their hand is between 0 and 4 and refuses a card if their hand is 6 or 7. After the player decides whether he would take the third card, the banker in turn decides either to accept or to refuse another card.

Once both the banker and the representative player have made their decision, the hands are turned face-up and compared.

If the player’s hand exceeds the banker’s hand when they are compared, each wagering player receives back their wager and a matching amount from the bank, and the position of banker passes to the next player in order. If, on the other hand, the banker’s hand exceeds the player’s hand, all wagers are forfeit and placed into the bank, and the banker position does not change. If there is a tie, wagers remain as they are for the next hand.

Chemin-de-Fer baccarat is the variant of Baccarat that was favored by James Bond.

James Bond plays the game in numerous novels, and the most famous would be his 1953 debut Casino Royale in which the entire plot revolves around this game between Bond and SMERSH operative Le Chiffre.

There was even the unabridged version that included a primer to the game for readers who are not familiar with Baccarat.

Thunderball (1967) was the most detailed treatment of a baccarat game in any Bond film.

CHAPTER 5

ONLINE GAME OF BACCARAT

Online Baccarat

In this chapter you will learn about online version of Baccarat.

You will see how to place bets in online version.

You will also find some great tips and strategies!

A live game of baccarat does not differ a lot from the online version. The rules are the same and you can make money either way. However, the difference is that in online game you will find some much lower minimum bets, which makes a change when it comes to the amount of bets you are able to place. In a live casino your budget might not allow you to place a risky bet on a tie, but if you can place lower minimum bets you will be able to risk from time to time – your money management will change according to the environment throughout the game.

The game starts when the bettor holding the shoe slides a card out and passes it to the dealer face down. The dealer then proceeds to pass it to the player (player bet). The next card is then also passed on to the banker hand which is placed next to the shoe.

The same process takes place again with the second cards.

In online game, the rule is the same: each hand has a minimum of 2 cards, except for a third card which is only dealt when needed and according to the rules. If a hand has a total of 8 or 9, it is called a ‘natural’.

A ‘natural’ always wins since 9 is the highest and best possible hand value. However, if a hand has a value of 5 or less, the player can hit or otherwise stand, resulting in the banker either requesting an extra card or revealing his hand.

Player’s hand

  • If a player’s hand value is between 6 and 9, the player stands
  • If the player gets a natural (8 or 9), the player automatically wins, unless the banker also has a natural: if both the Player and the Banker have the same value, then it’s a tie
  • If the Player’s initial two cards are between 6 and 9, then they stand
  • If the Player’s initial two cards total to 5 or less, then they go for an additional card

Banker’s hand

  • If the Banker’s initial two cards total between 7 and 9, then they stand
  • If the Banker’s initial two cards total between 0 and 3, then they hit
  • If the Banker’s cards total between 4 and 6, then they hit
  • The Banker always hits with a 4 against a Player’s total value between 2 and 7
  • The Banker always hits with a 5 against a Player’s total value between 4 and 7
  • The Banker always hits with a 6 against a Player’s total of 6 and 7

If you are a beginner at this game, and at online baccarat, please read on, as here you will find useful tips and some strategic ideas to increase your chances for winning.

These tips can only apply in an online casino game. You will see some tricks to help you play better and boost your betting strategy.

The first thing you should know is to check the odds of the game. If you are joining the table without being familiarized with the odds for the baccarat bets, you are decreasing largely your chances to win.

The normal commission deducted on bets placed on the Banker stands at 5%. The normal odds on a Player stand at 1:1. The Tie bet always pays at 8:1. It is said that the tie bet should be avoided since it has a terrible value and that the odds of the tie are quite low.

Now, let us see what to choose when it comes to betting.

One important thing to know is that Baccarat is essentially a game of luck and not of skill. This means that the game is easy, since you don’t have many decisions to make or too many rules to learn. However, many people would say that betting also requires some skills and knowing some smart strategies.

There are multiple websites that recommend betting on the Banker. On the other hand, the commission on Banker bets means you are likely to get less value back.

However, statistically and as a rule of the thumb, it is the Banker who wins more often than the Player. The reason for this can be actually found in the rules:  Whether the banker draws is largely dependent on the player hand. The banker takes a third card when the player draws one that is more likely to help that hand. That’s the key to the disparity in percentage of wins. The banker hand wins more often than the player hand because the banker hand is completed last, and many of banker’s drawing situations are dependent on what the player hand drew.

In the online game of baccarat, the Banker has a house edge of 1.06% and the Player has a house edge of 1.24%. This means that you are expected to use circa 1.06 units for each 100 units bet on the Banker and 1.24 units bet on the Player. These odds are some of the best house edges when compared to other online casino games.

When it comes to the Tie, it is also said that as for the Tie, the house edge stands at a massive 14.4%, which means that it is the riskiest to bet on a tie.. If you want to make a profit, it would be best to avoid betting on the Tie. Tie bets pay 8:1 or 9:1 and although that sounds quite alluring, tie bets rarely win. Many statistics claim that a tie bet tends to occur once every 11 hands on average.

Statistically, you can find that in most cases, the chances for a tie are indeed really small.

The best advice for any casino player would be to leave the table when they are winning. However this is usually hard to decide. What if you win the next round too? Why should I stop now? Sometimes it is difficult to leave if you are actually winning, because it is not easy to say when it is really enough. However, you could also easily lose everything you gained so far. For this reason, maybe it would be the best to figure out a sum you would like to have and would be glad to walk away from the table with. It is also good to decide on the sum you are willing to invest and not go above it. This advice is probably the best to give especially to the beginners, as they can easily get carried away while they are not yet even sure of all the rules and possible outcomes.

It is best not to continue betting for a long time after you have started winning, as obviously you are more likely to lose it all on a lost bet.

Don’t change your betting

Regardless of whether you are winning or losing, it is best to stick to one method of betting. Many players may get frustrated when they are losing and they can get tempted to boost their bet so that they could make up for their losses. Of course this may lead to greater losses as well.

You should accept that at some point you will lose, but this doesn’t mean that your strategy is bad. Just stick to it, and leave when you think you have profited the best. If you see that you are constantly losing, it may be the best to leave and take a chance another time.

Put in other words, you will see that many people stick to one bet. If you bet on the Banker and you see that he or she is winning, keep betting it. So, you lose on the Banker bet. Player wins. Don’t jump in with another bet. Rather wait for another decision. Whatever that decision is then that is what you bet.

However, don’t bet continuously on a tie. Ties occur only about once every 9.5 hands so you could waste a lot of money while you wait for this outcome.

Manage your bankroll

You should apply this tip for any game, not only for online baccarat. As already pointed out, losing sessions will always happen, but this is why your main priority should be to always have enough money in your bankroll to get you through those bad times. You can get so easily carried away by the game and think that it is ok if you spend just some more money because you believe you will compensate for it later. But, if you lose, then you will realize that you should have left that bankroll alone, because now every other bet is aggravated. You need to think about how much many you have (or don’t have) and you will not be able to bet so freely.

Read the rules of the specific online casino

Before signing up to a new online casino and especially before making any deposit, you should read the particularities of that casino, its rules and the ways they function.

Although this can be bothersome, be mindful that this is not just a game, but this is a virtual place you are going to leave your real money (and hopefully win some real money as well!). You are also increasing your chances of winning if you are completely familiar with all the rules.

This is why you should read the terms and conditions and get acquainted with the casino you are entering. When you are in the familiar area you are closer to winning.

It would be good to know how many bets are possible within a specific timeframe. There are online casinos that indeed share relevant statistical data with players such as how to use your bankroll best. You can also find the data on the number of hands played, the session time, and the number of hands played per hour. But if the online casino does not provide this information, make sure that you first play a few rounds of free baccarat to get the idea of all these things.

Use the online casino bonuses

If the online casino you signed up for has a possibility of the casino bonus, take your chance to profit. Taking a casino deposit bonus, it is for sure that you will have an advantage. If you have a deposit bonus, it is a better chance that you will get more profit.

The good thing about this game is that, although it is usually associated with high-class rich and glamorous people, you don’t really have to be rich to play it online. Baccarat is highly entertaining especially for people who enjoy nice casino betting games.
